I was under the impression that prandom_u32_max will return a value between 0 to whatever is supplied (in your example 7) and not 6. I noticed the description has the round bracket to indicate that it is excluded. If there is no need to do a bmsk - 1 then what you said makes sense. Main thing is to not go above the mask and to get a random non-zero value which fits within the mask.
